Einer der „Zehn Gründe für den Kiez“ war die Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) 2013 für eine Autorin des Berliner Tagesspiegels. Aber was bedeutet die Entscheidung für eine neue Zentral- und Landesbibliothek (ZLB) am Standort der AGB für die Südliche Friedrichstadt? Welche Elemente sind wichtig, damit die ZLB eine Bereicherung für die Nachbarschaft bleibt?

Die Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) am Blücherplatz hat sich in den letzten Jahren von einem Ort der Wissensvermittlung zu einem demokratischen Begegnungs- und Bildungsort gewandelt. Der Andrang ist groß und mit dem geplanten Umzug der Berliner Stadtbibliothek - dem zweiten Standort der Zentral- und Landesbibliothek (ZLB) - an die Adresse der AGB wird sich die Bibliothek vergrößern und das Baudenkmal durch einen Neubau erweitert werden. Die südliche Friedrichstadt, eines der ärmsten Gebiete Berlins, wird sich als Standort einer sehr guten und hochmodernen Bibliothek im nächsten Jahrzehnt auch äußerlich verändern.

Der Kiez ist geprägt von einem hohen Anteil an bildungsfernen Bewohner*innen, mit einer Arbeitslosigkeit, die doppelt so hoch ist wie im Berliner Durchschnitt. Lernen im Zuhause ist in überbelegten Wohnungen kaum möglich. Viele Menschen hier brauchen die Bibliothek als "dritten Ort". Die Herausforderung für die ZLB ist es, Angebote für alle Berliner*innen, unabhängig von ihrem Hintergrund, zu schaffen.

Wie muss der künftige Erweiterungsbau innen und außen gestaltet sein, damit er die Nachbarschaft anspricht? Welche Angebote sind in Zukunft nötig, damit die neue ZLB im Kiez verankert bleibt? Was kann die ZLB vom Kiez lernen? Darüber debattieren, unter Moderation der Urbanizers, Akteure der Gebietsvertretung Südliche Friedrichstadt, der Zentral- und Landesbibliothek und weitere Institutionen im Kiez mit Bibliotheksfans und –kritikern.

Library as "third place" in the neighbourhood

What will the new ZLB (central library) at Blücherplatz add to the neighbourhood - and what to the city of Berlin?

For one of the editors of the Berliner Tagesspiegel the America Memorial Libary (AGB) constituted one of the "Ten reasons in favour of the neighbourhood" in 2013. But what does the decision to install the new Zentral- und Landesbibliothek (ZLB, central library) at the AGB location mean for Southern Friedrichstadt? Which elements are important so that the ZLB remains an enrichment for the neighbourhood?

In recent years, the America Memorial Library (AGB) at Blücherplatz has transformed itself from a place of knowledge transfer to a democratic meeting point and place of education. Demand is high and with the planned move of the Berlin City Library - the second location of the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek (ZLB) - to the address of the AGB, the library will be expanded and extended by a new building. It can be expected that as new location of an excellent and ultra-modern library the Southern part of Friedrichstadt, one of the poorest areas of Berlin, will also change externally in the next decade.

The neighbourhood is characterised by a high proportion of relatively uneducated residents, with unemployment twice as high as the Berlin average. Studying at home is hardly possible in overcrowded apartments. Many people here need the library as a "third place". The challenge for the ZLB is to create options for all Berlin residents, regardless of their background.

What are the design requirements for the future extension – both internally and externally – for it to appeal to the neighbourhood? Which services will be necessary in the future to ensure that the new ZLB remains anchored in the neighbourhood? What can the ZLB learn from the neighbourhood?

Under the auspices of the Urbanizers, representatives from the regional council of Südliche Friedrichstadt, the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek and other institutions in the neighbourhood will debate this issue with library fans and critics.
