Community Land Trusts sind eine gemeinschaftliche, nicht-gewinnorientierte Eigentumsform, mit der Grund und Boden der Spekulation entzogen wird, um diesen dauerhaft für günstigen Wohnraum aber auch für andere soziale, kulturelle oder gewerbliche Nutzungen zur Verfügung zu stellen. In der Veranstaltung werden wir mit Referent*innen aus den USA und Großbritannien sowie lokalen Berliner Initiativen dieses Modell nachbarschaftlicher Selbstverwaltung erkunden.

Im Kontext der Bürgerrechtsbewegung der 1970er-Jahre im ländlichen Süden der USA entstanden, gibt es mittlerweile Hunderte von Community Land Trusts, hauptsächlich aber nicht ausschließlich, in den USA und Großbritannien. Gerade in den Städten sind diese zu einem erprobten Mittel gegen Gentrifizierung und Verdrängung geworden. Was können wir hier in Berlin von dieser Entwicklung lernen?

Die Kurzformel „community-led development on community-owned land“ fasst die Kernidee der Community Land Trusts treffend zusammen. Diese sind eine Möglichkeit der nachbarschaftlichen Verwaltung von Grund und Boden, in der gemeinschaftlich über die darauf befindlichen Nutzungen entschieden wird, so dass diese dem lokalen Bedarf entsprechen.

Die ganztägige Veranstaltung befasst sich mit den verschiedenen Aspekten des Community Land Trust Modells: Was bedeutet „Community“, welche Rolle spielt „Land“ dabei, wie und für wen wird dieses im „Trust“ treuhänderisch verwaltet? In einer Reihe von Kurzvorträgen und Workshops mit Referent*innen aus den USA und Großbritannien gehen wir diesen Fragen nach und lernen Strategien, Methoden und Werkzeuge nachbarschaftlicher Organisierung und Selbstverwaltung kennen, um sie für unsere hiesige Praxis nutzbar zu machen.

Learning from Community Land Trusts

Neighbourly self-government against land speculation and displacement

Community Land Trusts are a community, not-for-profit form of ownership that removes land from speculation in order to make it permanently available for affordable housing but also for other social, cultural or commercial uses. In the event, we will explore this model of neighbourhood self-government with speakers from the USA and Great Britain as well as local Berlin initiatives.

Evolved in the context of the civil rights movement of the 1970s in the rural South of the USA, there are now hundreds of community land trusts, mainly but not exclusively, in the USA and Great Britain. These have become a tried and tested means against gentrification and repression, especially in the cities. What can we learn from this development here in Berlin?

The short formula "community-led development on community-owned land" aptly summarises the core idea of Community Land Trusts. These are a way of neighbourly land management, where decisions about the use of the land are made jointly so that they correspond to local needs.

The full-day event will deal with the various aspects of the Community Land Trust Model: What does "community" mean, what role does "land" play in this, how and for whom is it administered in trust? In a series of short lectures and workshops with speakers from the USA and Great Britain, we will explore these questions and learn about strategies, methods and tools of neighbourly organisation and self-administration in order to make them useful for our local practice.
